Technical and Historical Notes
As the New United Nations Earth consolidated its power in its plot for world domination during the post-7th Space War in the After War Era, the military began development of advanced new mobile weapons. When the crew of the Vulture land battleship Freeden learned of the existence of a new mobile suit equipped with the devastating satellite system and went to investigate, they were forced to surrender at the New UNE's Zonder Epta base under the threat of the new GX-9901-DX Gundam Double X. However, the Freeden crew soon managed to make their escape, and Vulture pilot Garrod Ran captured the Gundam Double X for their own use.

The Double X was a great improvement over its GX-9900 Gundam X predecessor. It mounted a much more powerful twin satellite cannon, as well as improved hyper beam swords and a wide variety of hand armaments. However, one critical difference between the Double X and the GX was its lack of a flash system; instead, the recorded brainwaves of Jamil Neate - stored in the computer of his wrecked original Gundam X which was recovered by the New UNE - were recorded in the Double X's control computer, allowing a non-Newtype pilot to activate the satellite system and fire the Double X's twin satellite cannon. Like the Gundam X, a G-controller unit was required to activate the Double X and fire the twin satellite cannon. Fortunately for Garrod, his G-controller that he used on his old GX was compatible with the Double X, allowing him to use its devastating weapon. In the last battle of the 8th Space War, the Double X was severely damaged in a final duel with the Frost brothers.

Dark Gundam

The Dark Gundam began its existence as the Ultimate Gundam, a revolutionary new mobile fighter developed by Dr. Raizo Kasshu and his son Kyoji at the space colony of Neo Japan. Thanks to the miracle of nanotechnology, this unique machine possessed unlimited powers of self-multiplication, self-recovery, and self-evolution.
However, the Ultimate Gundam was stolen by Kyoji Kasshu and taken to Earth, where it metamorphosed into the terrifying Dark Gundam. Now this dangerous machine is hidden somewhere on the planet, infecting the dueling Gundam Fighters with biomechanical DG Cells and gathering a rampaging Dark Army to overrun Earth's cities.
In hopes of averting a global disaster, Neo Japan's government dispatches Dr. Kasshu's younger son Domon to Earth, with orders to simultaneously win the 13th Gundam Fight and track down the rogue Dark Gundam.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam

After Mobile Suit Victory Gundam finished airing in Japan in early 1994, Bandai celebrated Gundam's 15th anniversary by trying something new: free the franchise from the continuity of the the Universal Century (and sell more model kits). Thus, the alternate universes were born that are the settings for every TV series following Victory Gundam. Premiering in 1994, G Gundam was the first alternate universe series, and perhaps one of the most controversial. Directed by Giant Robo's Yasuhiro Imagawa, this series takes a vastly different approach to the Gundam saga. Instead of having wars between the colonies and the Earth, a fighting tournament is held to determine the ruler of the colonies. Called the Gundam Fight, it is held once every four years by the United Colonies Federation. Each country has its own representative Gundam (some of which are really ridiculous looking), and the Gundams fight on Earth until only one is left. Set in FC 60, this series chronicles the 13th Gundam Fight and stars Neo Japanese Gundam Fighter Domon Kasshu, who is in the fight as much to win as to fulfill a personal quest. The series aired on Cartoon Network in 2002 and is available on DVD. Please note that the names of various mobile suits were changed for the American release. The reviews here follow the original Japanese names devised by Sunrise. Although some of the changes don't make sense, the list below documents all the changes.

Technical and Historical Notes
As the Earth Federation Forces' Titans force continued to build up its military and political power in its crusade to rule the Earth Sphere with an iron fist, one area of research actively pursued by the Titans was "cyber Newtypes" - artificially-engineered Newtypes who could operate revolutionary new Newtype-controlled weapons. At their Murasame Laboratory in Japan, the Titans built the Federation's first Newtype-use unit, the MRX-009 Psyco Gundam. Equipped with a psycommu ("psychic communicator") system similar to that developed by the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War (hence the name "Psyco," which is short for "psycommu"), the Psyco Gundam's tremendous beam weapon firepower could be controlled by the pilot's mere thoughts. The Psyco Gundam was heavily armed, sporting a 3-barreled scattering beam gun in its chest, ten beam guns in its fingers and a 2-barrel beam gun in its head, making the unit capable of attacking several targets at one (or levelling lots of real estate). Due to its massive size, the Psyco Gundam could transform into a "mobile fortress" mode equipped with a Minovsky craft system to give it high-altitude atmospheric flight. The Psyco Gundam's chosen pilot was Murasame Labs' cyber Newtype "Number Four," or Four Murasame, and the unit was soon dispatched to destroy the AEUG and Karaba forces operating on Earth. The Psyco Gundam was severely damaged during an AEUG mission to launch Kamille Bidan and his RX-178 Gundam Mark II back out into space, and the Psyco Gundam was taken to the Titans' Kilimanjaro base in Africa, where it would be repaired and equipped with an experimental new "psycho-control chair," further enhancing Four's abilities to control the Psyco Gundam.

Anubis : Zone of The Enders

Anubis is the name of an orbital frame in the Playstation 2, Konami video games Zone of the Enders and Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner (in Japan the game was named Anubis: Zone of the Enders after this mecha) and makes a cameo appearance in the anime series Zone of the Enders: Delores, i. It is named after the Egyptian god of embalment and the underworld, Anubis. Its first appeance at the end of the first game in the series as an undefeatable final boss. The player was expected to bypass this boss by surviving the fight for a set amount of time before being given the chance to escape, leaving Anubis undefeated. Anubis is a mecha that is primarily colored maroon and is equipped with advanced technology and weaponry. Beginning near the end of the first game, Anubis's pilot, or Runner, becomes Ridley Hardiman, more commonly know as Nohman, Colonel of the Mars anti-terrestrial military movement, BAHRAM. Nohman continues to pilot Anubis for the remainder of the series.

Mechanics and Technology
Anubis's primary ability is the Zero Shift, which allows it to teleport nearly instantly to nearby locations. This is done through space compression in the Vector Trap. (Later Explained) As shown in the animated series Zone of the Enders: Dolores, i (episode 16,) the "wings" on Anubis' back are actually large vector trap generators. These can be used as a form of very powerful defensive measure, warping space to redirect any ranged attack targeted at Anubis back at the attacker.

History and Role
Anubis is known as the most powerful orbital frame ever created. It is the main antagonist in the series. Anubis was created at the Antilia satellite colony of Jupiter as part of the Aumaan Plan, along with its sister Orbital Frame Jehuty. Though there are obvious physical differences between the two frames, they are functionally identical. However, for most of the series Jehuty is less powerful than Anubis due to limitations imposed on it by a more basic version of its firmware. If both Anubis and Jehuty were to have the same firmware, then their performance would be precisely even. Anubis' concept was originally created by mechanical designer Yoji Shinkawa as the primary antagonist mecha in some old sketches that he created as a student.[1] It can be said that Anubis was the first mecha concept that Shinkawa made that used an Egyptian theme, and all the other Egyptian-themed mecha in the Zone of the Enders franchise borrowed this idea from the Anubis concept.

Jehuty : Zone of the Enders

Jehuty is the name of an orbital frame in the Playstation 2, Konami video game Zone of the Enders. It is a mecha that is primarily colored blue with some red spots and is equipped with advanced technology and weaponry. Through the game's plot, Jehuty's pilot, or Runner, is Leo Stenbuck.

Jehuty also appears in the sequel to the video game, Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner. Its design changes only slightly in this appearance. Jehuty's Runner throughout the plot of this game is Dingo Egret.

The name "Jehuty" comes from the Egyptian god "Djehuty."

Technical and Historical Notes
A prototype mobile suit intended for mass production, Anaheim Electronics' RGZ-91 Re-GZ was a simplified version of the AEUG's MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam used in the Gryps War and the Neo Zeon War. The Re-GZ (short for "REfined Gundam Zeta") eliminated the costly and complex transformation systems used by the Zeta Gundam, instead docking with a specialized "Back Weapon System" (or "BWS") unit which allowed the Re-GZ to assume a waverider-like form for additional mobility. As the mobile suit's weapons could not be used in this docked configuration, the BWS was armed with beam weapons and missile launchers, giving the Re-GZ considerable firepower in waverider mode. In the end, however, the Re-GZ would still be deemed to expensive to facilitate mass-production, and the design project was dropped. The Re-GZ prototype would end up being employed by the Earth Federation Forces' "Londo Bell" taskforce during the Second Neo Zeon War, piloted first by reknown Newtype ace Amuro Ray, and later by mobile suit squadron leader Kayra Su.

A descendant of the GM series of mobile suits launched by the Earth Federation Forces during the One Year War, the RGM-89 Jegan was lighter and more maneuverable than any previous GM-series model. Although not as fast or well-armed as the previous RGM-86R GM III, the Jegan was an all-around well-performing unit nonetheless. The Jegan mounted a fairly standard variety of weapons, armed with a beam rifle, a beam saber, shield-mounted missile launchers, three hand grenades, and an optional head vulcan gun pod. Though initially built by Anaheim Electronics exclusively for the Londo Bell task force prior to the outbreak of the Second Neo Zeon War in UC 0093, the Jegan (and many of its variants) would soon become a Earth Federation Forces standard, operated as its primary frontline unit for at least the next thirty years.

Technical and Historical Notes
When the presumed-dead Char Aznable made a surprise reappearance in the early UC 0090s, many surviving Zeon remnants and spacenoid civilians still desiring independence from the Earth Federation welcomed him with open arms. Thus, a second Neo Zeon movement was started at the colony of Sweetwater, with Char as its leader. A new revolution against the Federation was now brewing, and as the new Neo Zeon military began building its forces, Char commissioned his engineers to design him a custom mobile suit to take advantage of his Newtype abilities and superb piloting skills.

This design was the MSN-04 Sazabi, and it was constructed by the Luna-based contractor Anaheim Electronics. Despite its large size and heavy armor, the Sazabi was equipped with enough thrusters and verniers to make it extremely maneuverable compared to mass-produced frontline mobile suits. It was equipped with a relatively high-output generator, but most of its power was used to fire its abdomen-mounted mega particle gun, whose beam was wide enough and powerful enough to destroy several mobile suits with a single shot. The Sazabi's armament was rounded out by a pair of beam sabers, a large shield carrying three missiles and a large, hand-carried beam tomahawk, and a beam shotrifle, which operated like a beam rifle version of a shotgun.

However, the Sazabi was also designed as a Newtype's weapon. Armed with six remote funnel units, Char could mentally control these weapons at great distances and without the disadvantage of Minovsky particle interference. His funnels were controlled via a fairly standard psycommu (short for "PSYchic COMMUnicator") system, but the Sazabi was also the first mobile suit to feature a revolutionary new piece of Newtype-use technology. This feature was called the "psycoframe", and it involved constructing the cockpit's frame with a material composed of microscopic psycommu receptors, thus increasing the pilot's Newtype sensitivity and responsiveness. Strangely enough, Char - for reasons known only to himself - would authorize Anaheim to pass along the psycoframe technology to the Earth Federation Forces' Londo Bell taskforce, who had also contracted Anaheim to construct a new Gundam mobile suit to be used by Char's old rival, Amuro Ray.

Always having been a soldier who preferred to lead his troops into battle rather than command from the rear lines, Char would deploy quite often in his crimson-red Sazabi during the Second Neo Zeon War that he started when he began bombarding Earth with asteroids in UC 0093. Soon enough, Char would come up against Amuro Ray in his own psycoframe-equipped mobile suit, the RX-93 n Gundam, and their battle of Newtype minds and mecha would reach its fateful, inevitable conclusion.

Char Characteristics

Char has several recognizable characteristics:

  1. Has blonde hair.
  2. Often wears red clothing.
  3. Usually wears a mask or sunglasses to hide his true identity.
  4. Usually pilots red (or, arguably pink-ish) mobile suits. Exception to this is the MSN-0100 Hyaku Shiki, which is painted in bright gold yellow, and the MSN-02 Zeong, which was painted in a greyish colour (this is due to the fact that the Zeong wasn't finished- they didn't have time to give it legs much less paint it).
  5. Sports a small, diagonal scar between his eyes (incurred during a sword fight with Garma Zabi during their academy days, which was used as an excuse for the head gear Char first wore to hide his identity. Argued that it was caused by Amuro Ray during a sword duel but in fact the strike was blocked by Char's helmet.)
  6. He is never shown driving a car throughout his appearances (though he is seen driving one in CDA).
  7. Often suspected of Ephebophilia, as supposedly exemplified by his relationship with Lalah Sune (whose age is 14, and, according to Tomino's novel Secret Rendezvous: Amuro and Lalah, was discovered by Char working as a prostitute), and Haman Karn, who was 14 at the beginning of their relationship (Char himself was no more than 19), as detailed in the manga Portrait of a Young Comet - Char's Deleted Affair. Char also swayed the disillusioned Quess Paraya (13 years old according to Gundam Official Guide) during the events of the movie Char's Counterattack, where Quess latched onto Char after being rebuffed by Amuro Ray in hopes of learning from famous Newtypes. Also, according to the Playstation game for Zeta Gundam, in his scenario two escorts was shown guiding Mineva Zabi to a private cabin in a resort colony. Though many fans suspect Char of being an ephebophile, Tomino has categorically denied this.
  8. By the time of Zeta Gundam, he has had four different names, his birthname Casval Rem Deikun, Edward Mass, the name given to him when he whisked away to avoid being targeted by the Zabi family, Char Aznable, the name he'd bear for much of his life, and finally Quattro Bajeena, which was come up with because this was his fourth alias. (Quattro is Italian for 4)
The name Char Aznable was said to be inspired by French singer and songwriter Charles Aznavour (シャルル・アズナブール) and character named Charkin in an earlier robot anime Raiden

Char Aznable

Char Aznable (シャア・アズナブル Shā Azunaburu) is a fictional character, and often one of the main antagonists from the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam and its sequels, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and Char's Counterattack, voiced by Shuichi Ikeda (Japanese), Michael Kopsa (English dub of original series and Char's Counterattack), Steven Blum (Mobile Suit Gundam movies 1 through 3) and Tom Edwards (English dub of Zeta Gundam).

MS-07B Gouf

Quickly though, the A-Type Gouf was replaced by the completed MS-07B Gouf model. This full model had the 75 mm machine gun hand and "heat rod", which could be used as a superheated slicing weapon or as a grappling weapon with a powerful electric shock effect. It also had a powerful heat sword, an improved heat-based weapon from the Zaku's heat hawk. The Gouf could also use the standard Zaku II weapons, such as 120 mm machine gun or 280 mm bazooka.

The Zeon pilot, Lieutenant Ramba Ral, played havoc with the crew of the Pagasus-Class Assualt Carrier White Base and the young pilot of the RX-78-2 Gundam with his YMS-07B Gouf, a prototype of the standard B-Type Gouf.

The Gouf easily outstripped the MS-06F Zaku II, but its improvement was not justified by its increased cost. The Gouf's production was cut short by the development of a more cost efficient unit, the more powerful and nimble MS-09 Dom. Despite its very short production run, it was still deployed across the world alongside Zakus and Doms.

MS-07A Gouf

Although the MS-06J Zaku II Ground Type was doing a fair job, the Principality of Zeon saw a need for a more effective ground based mobile suit for their operations on Earth. After the designing and testing of the YMS-07A Prototype Gouf, the first model Gouf was rolled out as the MS-07A Gouf. The A-Type Gouf was a "dumbed-down" model of the true model design. It had been released early to training battalions to get pilots used to the controls. Some models were also released into combat service for those units that desperately needed a higher performance mobile suit. The A-Type Gouf lacked several of weapons from its mass production brother, including the 75 mm five-finger/barrel machine gun left hand and the tentacle-whip "heat rod" mounted on the right forearm.

YMS-07A Prototype Gouf

The Gouf was the successor to the MA-06J Zaku II Ground Type mobile suit. The Zeonic Company engineers worked hard to produce their superior ground-combat-use mobile suit to replace the older J-Type Zaku II.

The Prototype Gouf was just a redesigned and improved upon Zaku II, lighter due to more efficient use of equipment and space, and more maneuverable than the typical F-Type Zaku II. The Prototype Gouf was also supposed to be built with a 5-barreled 75 mm machine gun hand and tentacle-like heat rod built into the forearm. However, these weapons were not ready until the second prototype, the YMS-07B Prototype Gouf, was finished. The B-Type Prototype Gouf also featured extra thrusters built into the legs to provide powerful, jet assisted jumps and improved maneuverability. The YMS-07B was nearly identical to the mass production version of the Gouf known as the MS-07B Gouf

The next mobile suit in the series is the ZGM-2000 GOUF Ignited. The prototype version, designated X2000, introduces several new features. Unlike the ZAKU series, the GOUF (Guardian of Unity Forerunner) Ignited does not use interchangeable Wizard packs and is instead equipped with a flight pack that functions in Earth's atmosphere or in space. The GOUF Ignited is armed with a pair of 4-barrel beam guns, a beam sword and a two whip-like heat rod that can deliver electrical shocks. During the developmental phase of the GOUF Ignited, ZAFT produces a close combat variant, the ZGMF-X2000 QGB&S GOUF Crusher. One orange-colored GOUF Ignited prototype is used by FAITH pilot Heine Westenfluss, who is assigned to the battleship Minerva by ZAFT Supreme Council Chairman Gilbert Durandal. Heine is killed in action in a battle at the Dardanelles channel by Stella Loussier's ZGMF-X88S (RGX-03) Gaia Gundam.

    Zeta Gundam

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (Kidō Senshi Z Gandamu) (aired 1985 - 1986) was a televisied anime, one of Gundam series and a sequel to the original Mobile Suit Gundam.

The show was written and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, with character designs by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, while the series' mechanical designs were split amongst Kunio Okawara, Mamoru Nagano, and Kazumi Fujita.

The series was originally aired by Nagoya Broadcasting Network (and it's sister ANN stations), rerun on the anime satellite television network, Animax, across Japan and later its respective networks worldwide, including Southeast Asia, East Asia, Latin America, and other regions.

In 2004, after more than a year of delays, Bandai released a limited edition Zeta Gundam box set with both dubbed English and original Japanese audio tracks. Due to Bandai not having rights to the theme songs outside of Asia, the opening and closing sequences were altered, and the English subtitles were criticized as having translation errors - specifically having proto-dubtitles which were less accurate to the original Japanese than the English dubbed version. The set included pencil sharpener collectibles and a 48-page booklet and poster. Bandai corrected the subtitles to a properly translated version for the single DVD release but has never officially recalled or replaced the boxset discs.

In 2006, Bandai Entertainment has acquired the rights to the U.S release of the Zeta Gundam: A New Translation -Heirs to the Stars- movie which is expected to be available sometime in early 2007.

    Wing Gundam Zero

Wing Zero is by far the most powerful Gundam in the After Colony era. The primary armament of the mobile suit is the Twin Buster Rifle, a weapon capable of destroying objects several miles in size, like a space colony. When separated into two individual Buster Rifles, the rifles could destroy entire waves of targets. Like the Wing Gundam, Wing Zero is also capable of transforming into a flying machine, known as "Neo-Bird" mode, and allowing the suit to travel long distances at high speed.

The main feature of Wing Zero is the ZERO System, a combat computer/pilot interface installed in the cockpit. The ZERO system connects directly with the mind of the pilot, flooding him with combat data and possible outcomes. This overload of data could allow the pilot to achieve total victory, but placed great mental and emotional stress on the pilot. Those exposed to ZERO system can become totally unstable, become unable to tell the difference between friend and foe, and even suffer mental break-down or death.

During Katoki's redesign for Endless Waltz, the design of Wing Zero is streamlined, with new armour and recolouring to almost solely blue and white. The main change was the addition of angel-like wing binders, which could also be used as a re-entry shield. The design changes eliminated the "Neo-Bird" mode. The Endless Waltz Wing Zero is referred to as Wing Zero Custom by Bandai in its model kit releases, and also by fans.

Gundam Ace magazine polls have placed the Wing Gundam Zero Custom design fourth in the top 30 Mobile Suits of all time.

    Big Toy

Gundam in Japan is more than an anime, it’s a culture, a phenomenon, and I’d even dare say, a “cult”. Entire stores are consecrated to Gundam goodies, mainly figurines and parts, and thousands and thousands of Gundam Otaku flock every week to feed their passion for the legendary Mechas. Bandai is well aware of the fact that Gundam fans , who used to watch the series since the 80s, are not kids anymore. Therefore they started retailing a lifesize gundam plastic model, targeting “fans in their 20s to 40s”. This big “toy” is 5 feet tall (1.5 m) , and weighs 44 pounds (20 Kg), featuring 14 movable and rotating joints, including fingers, and can emit several sound effects that are common in the series. The only downside is its price: 330,000 Yen.

The Story of Gundam Seed Destiny

Two years after the conclusion of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, a new chapter in the saga of the Cosmic Era begins. Gundam Seed Destiny introduces a new cast of heroes, in the form of Shinn Asuka and the crew of the ZAFT warship Minerva, as well as a number of returning characters from the previous series.
In Gundam Seed Destiny, we learn that the tensions between Earth and the PLANTs have continued even after the end of the previous war, and it seems almost inevitable that this brief interval of peace will soon give way to a new conflict. Is humanity doomed to endlessly repeat this cycle of war and hatred, or is there a way to break the chain and establish a lasting peace? And if so, will it be worth the cost?

    Bloody Valentine

On February 14, C.E. 70, three days after its formal declaration of war, the Earth Alliance carried out its first attack on the PLANTs. Using nuclear missiles which had been secretly loaded aboard the mobile armor carrier Roosevelt, the Alliance forces destroyed the PLANT known as Junius Seven and massacred its 243,721 inhabitants. The Alliance subsequently claimed that Junius Seven had deliberately self-destructed, but the people of the PLANTs knew better, and the Bloody Valentine tragedy became a rallying cry for the young Coordinators who rushed to join the ZAFT forces in the wake of this horrifying act of mass murdur.

    Cosmic Era

The new calendar adopted during the age of space exploration in which Gundam Seed takes place. The Cosmic Era calendar was adopted by the United Nations at the end of the Reconstruction War, and the final use of nuclear weapons during the Kashmir conflict was chosen to mark the first year of the new era. Simultaneously with the adoption of this new calendar, the United Nations launched a new space development program. Construction of the fourth-generation international space station Yggdrasil, which had been interrupted by the global war, resumed in C.E. 9, and the following year the foundations of the lunar city Copernicus were laid.
The story of Gundam Seed begins on January 25, C.E. 71, almost one year after the outbreak of open war between the PLANTs and the Earth Alliance. The story of Gundam Seed Destiny begins two years later on October 2, C.E. 73.

Optional fixed armaments: 4-tube missile pod, mounted on left legOptional armament: heat axe x 1

    Technical and Historical Notes
During a battle against the New UNE's massive (and beam weapon-proof) NRX-010 Gable mobile suit, Roybea Loy's GT-9600 Gundam Leopard was heavily damaged, as his was the only unit among the Freeden's mobile suit complement armed with a significant number of conventional, non-beam weapons. Following the battle, the Freeden's ever-resourceful mobile suit mechanic, young Kid Salsamille, set to work to rebuild Roybea's suit. The refurbished unit was renamed GT-9600-D Gundam Leopard Destroy, and its weaponry loadout was overhauled, replacing many of its old conventional arms with a greater number of beam weapons. As a result, the Leopard Destroy's armament was now considered more "well-balanced", thus helping Roybea to better use his Gundam against the increasingly powerful New UNE military.
The Leopard Destroy, now repainted in dashing red and white, had a more balanced artillery than its previous form. The single left-arm-mounted gatling was replaced with a pair of beam gatlings which were mounted over the Leopard Destroy's forearms. The standard grenade launcher, previously located on the right hand, was replaced by set of fire linked beam cannons. The shoulders had an 11-tube missile launcher and a twin-barreled beam cannon attached, and the head vulcans were removed to make way for beam vulcans.
The Leopard Destroy also had a few other special features which weren't made much use of. Presumably, the Flash System which allowed a Newtype pilot to control a set of Ft-9600 Gt-Bit Mobile Suits was still installed in the Leopard Destroy, despite Roybea Roy lacking the Newtype powers necessary to perform such a task. It also retained a set of hardpoints which allowed it to dock with Paula Shisu's G-Falcon, an Old United Nations Earth fighter designed to support the original Gundam trio fielded by the Federation. When docked with the G-Falcon, the Leopard Destroy could take to the skies and launch a bombing raid from above. This feature was only ever tested once, as the Freeden's crew made its way to space before long.

    Miscellaneous Information
    Pilot: Roybea Loy
    Appearances: After War Gundam X
    Original mechanical designer: Kunio Okawara

Gundam : Star Trek of Japan

Gundam is the definitive Japanese mecha series. Many people consider it the "Star Trek of Japan" because of several striking similarities. The first series in each franchice suffered poor ratings in their initial runs, only to enjoy massive success in reruns. Both were resurrected as feature films, and both enjoyed continued success with many spinoff series. In the case of Gundam, this success has created 10 TV series, 5 OVA series, and 3 movies to date. When Bandai Entertainment began releasing anime in 1998, some of the first things it released included the Gundam movie trilogy, Gundam 0080 and Gundam 0083. The franchise was rather low key in the U.S. until Cartoon Network broadcast Gundam Wing in 2000 and it became a runaway success. In each subsequent year, Bandai has released several UC and alternate universe series, most recently Gundam SEED DESTINY. In Japan, Bandai is releasing a Gundam SEED DESTINY Special Edition, and a Gundam SEED theatrical film is in the works.

    Mobile Suit Victory Gundam

In 1993, Yoshiyuki Tomino premiered the first new Gundam TV series in 6 years with Mobile Suit Victory Gundam. With F91, he attempted to show a new generation of characters by moving forward 30 years. With this series, he moves forward another 30 years to UC 0153. The Federation and Zeon conflict is long over, as is the Federation and Crossbone Vanguard conflict. Now, the Earth Federation continues to weaken as the spaceborn Zanscare Empire attempts to conquer Earth. Only the AEUG-like League Militaire stands in their way, and their secret weapon is the mass-produced Victory Gundam. Unlike the kiddie pleaser Gundam ZZ, Victory Gundam returns to the darker roots of Zeta Gundam and is considered by many to be the best UC series after Zeta Gundam. Currently, Victory Gundam has the distinction of being the final animated series set in the Universal Century. Following the end of this series in early 1994, Sunrise began producing the Alternate Universe series, beginning with Mobile Fighter G Gundam.

    Gundam F91

Originally planned as a full-length television series, Gundam F91 hit a production snag due to staff disputes, and the project was stopped after the screenplays for the first thirteen episodes were written. It was then decided that what was made of the show would be condensed into a theatrical feature film. Predictably, condensing a story originally intended to be told over the course of fifty half-hour episodes into less than two hours of screen time required much of the original story to be cut, and the results are generally regarded as less than satisfactory.

The story of Gundam F91 revolves around teenage space colonist Seabook Arno, his girlfriend Cecily Fairchild, and the efforts of the Crossbone Vanguard militia, led by Cecily's grandfather Meitzer Ronah, to establish an aristocracy known as "Cosmo Babylonia". In keeping with Gundam tradition, the civilian Seabook is forced by circumstance to pilot the Gundam F91, coincidentally designed in part by his estranged mother, Dr. Monica Arno.

The Gundam F91 story was fleshed out in much greater detail in Tomino's two-part novelization. Tomino's maga, Crossbone Gundam, is a direct sequel which takes place ten years after the events of the movie.

    Who makes Gundam?

The original Gundam series was produced in 1979 by Japan's Sunrise, Inc. animation studio, then known as Nippon Sunrise. In 1994 Sunrise officially became part of Bandai Co., whose Bandai Entertainment division is now releasing Gundam in North America. The original creators of Gundam were director Yoshiyuki Tomino and the mysterious "Hajime Yatate" (a pen name reflecting the collective contributions of the Sunrise staff). Character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and mechanical designer Kunio Okawara also played a large role in the original series's success, and their participation in subsequent sequels is always cause for celebration among longtime fans.

The first few Gundam sequels were all written and directed by Tomino, but in the saga's second decade, Sunrise began inviting other creators to contribute their artistic visions to the Gundam saga. Among the Japanese animation legends who've contributed to the Gundam ethos are top directors like Yasuhiro Imagawa (Giant Robo), Masashi Ikeda (Ronin Warriors), and Takeyuki Kanda (Round Vernian Vifam); writers Ryosuke Takahashi (Armored Trooper Votoms) and Hiroyuki Yamaga (Wings of Honneamise); and character designers such as Haruhiko Mikimoto (Macross), Toshihiro Kawamoto (Cowboy Bebop), Shuko Murase (Gasaraki), and Capcom's Akira Yasuda.

The roster of Gundam mechanical designers reads like a virtual who's who of the industry. Past and present mobile suit creators include Shoji Kawamori (Macross, Vision of Escaflowne), Hajime Katoki (Virtual On), Kimitoshi Yamane (Vision of Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop), Yutaka Izubuchi (Mobile Police Patlabor), Makoto Kobayashi (Giant Robo), Mika Akitaka (Martian Successor Nadesico), Mamoru Nagano (Five Star Stories), and even Syd Mead (Blade Runner, Aliens). Deathscythe Gundam

This black, scythe-toting Gundam was created near the L2 colony cluster by the Sweeper Group salvage organization. The aptly-named Deathscythe is equipped with hyper jammers that conceal it from cameras and radar, allowing this Gundam to ambush enemy mobile suits and strike them down with one blow from its mighty beam scythe. Its buster shield also emits an energy blade, and can even be launched at nearby foes. Since the Gundam Deathscythe relies on short-range weapons, it's designed to dash towards its targets at high speed.

    Shenlong Gundam

Created by the reistance fighters of the L5 colony cluster, this Gundam's name is derived from the Chinese phrase "god dragon." The Shenlong Gundam's specialty is close-quarters fighting, using its spear-like beam glaive and the extendable "dragon fang" claw built into its right arm. The muzzle of the dragon fang also contains a pair of medium-range flamethrowers; the Shenlong can grasp an enemy mobile suit with its claw, then activate these flamethrowers to perform the scorching "dragon fang fire" attack.
